LESSON OVERVIEW

WEEK:: ONE

This week’s Psalm is about how uniquely God made each of us.

THE BIG IDEA: I am wonderful because God made me.
THE BIBLE: Psalm 139; Psalm 104:24

Look up Psalm 139 :1-6, 14 in your Bible and read it to the kids.
Well, that’s interesting! This Bible passage tells us God knows when you are sitting down! Do you think God knows you are all sitting down right now? Yes, God does!
Now, stand up. Does God know you are all standing up? Yes, God knows that, too! Now, lie down. Does God know you are lying down? Yep! God knows that, too! Everyone can sit back up now.
God knows everything we do because God made each of us. Verse 14 says we are each wonderfully made by God!
I am wonderful because God made me! You are wonderful because God made you!

ACTIVITY | Fingerprints

INSTRUCTIONS: Tell each kid to put their thumb on an ink pad and then press their thumb down onto a piece of paper. Using magnifying glasses, lead the kids to compare their thumbprints and discover that each one is unique.

#TODDLERHACK: Instead of finger prints, have a large sheet of craft paper rolled on the ground or on a table. With crayons, trace around everyone’s hands. Talk about all the things we can do with our hands. Say, “We are all wonderfully made by God.”

Did you know no one in the whole entire world has the same fingerprint as you? God gave every single person their own set of fingerprints that is different from every single other person.
Our fingerprints are great reminders that God loves us. You are wonderful because God made you!

PRAYER

Thank You, God, for making me and all my friends. You made each of us exactly how You want us to be. Help us to love ourselves and our uniqueness and remind us we are each wonderfully made!

SING: A SERIES ON THE PSALMS

SERIES OVERVIEW:

People say music is the universal language, something everyone loves in one form or another, and a way we can communicate shared emotion and experience even across generations, culture, location, backgrounds, and traditions. Much of what is expressed in the book of Psalm are things we experience and feel today. Because of that, we can learn a lot about God and ourselves in these Psalms. When kids can claim these five things – I am wonderful because God made me; I am safe because God watches over me; I am confident because God leads me; I am forgiven because God loves me; I am not afraid because God can be trusted – they will be unstoppable in their life with God!

Lesson Overview

God Speaks to Elijah in a Whisper: 1 Kings 19; (John 10:27)

The BIG Idea: It's amazing! God speaks to me.

  • Does anyone remember who Elijah is from our Bible story?

    1. But some people didn't like Elijah and didn't like him telling people what God was saying. There was one person who really, really didn't like Elijah. Her name was Jezebel and she wanted to hurt Elijah. Was that nice of Jezebel? No! But she was the queen so she had a lot of soldiers helping her, too. How do you think that made Elijah feel? Yes, I would be scared, too!

    2. Elijah was afraid and ran. He felt like he was all alone. So, guess what God did? God took care of Elijah again! Let's see how.

    3. INSTRUCTIONS: Read 1 Kings 19:11-13.

      • TODDLER HACK: Have kids try making sound effects with you while you tell the story, such as blowing air for wind, pounding the floor or for earthquake, crackling sounds for fire.

    4. God told Elijah to go stand on a mountain and that God would pass by.

    5. Then, there was a strong wind! The wind was so powerful, it shattered rocks! Was God in the wind? No, God wasn't in the wind.

    6. But then a great earthquake came. Was God in the earthquake? No, God was not in the earthquake either.

    7. And then, there was a fire. Was God in the fire? No, God wasn't in the fire either.

    8. So, where was God? Yes! God came in a gentle whisper. God told Elijah he wasn't alone. There were 7,000 people out there who still believed in God, like Elijah did.

    9. Once again, God knew what Elijah needed and God provided it. This time, what Elijah really needed was to hear what God had to say. God is amazing! God spoke to Elijah and God speaks to you and me!

AMAZED: A SERIES ON ELIJAH

SERIES OVERVIEW:

This month, we are going through the major events in the life of prophet Elijah, all of which are nothing short of amazing! Elijah’s ministry took place during turbulent times for God’s people – so much so that Elijah felt utterly alone at times. Sometimes he was literally alone. But God’s presence and power with Elijah throughout those times are undeniable. Through these stories, kids will discover how amazing it is that God takes care of us, God knows what’s best for us, God speaks to us, and all in all, God does SO MANY amazing things!

Lesson Overview

Elijah and the Prophets of Baal: I Kings 18; (Philippians 4:19)

The BIG Idea: It's amazing! God knows what's best for me.

  • Elijah was someone who really, really loved God. But not everyone loved God. There was a king named King Ahab and he was mean and didn't obey God.

    1. Can you show me a mean face? Yes, that was King Ahab! King Ahab and the people of Israel prayed to a great, big statue they called, Baal. Baal wasn't God. Baal wasn't real at all. It was just a big statue.

    2. Do you think anything happens when you pray to a statue? No! That's silly.

    3. Do you think anything happens when we pray to God? Yes! God hears us and God answers our prayers.

    4. One day, King Ahab and Elijah decided to have a contest to see whose God was the real and true God.

    5. They both built an altar. It kind of looks like a big fire pit made with stones and wood. They put uncooked meat on the top. Then, King Ahab's people prayed to Baal to light the fire. They prayed from morning until night. They prayed and prayed and prayed. And nothing happened. Then, it was Elijah's turn. Let's read what happens in our Bible.

    6. Read 1 Kings 18:33-39.

      • TODDLER HACK: Simplify the story and use story cards (like these). For example: Elijah loved God (card 30), King Ahab did not obey God (card 14), Elijah built an altar (card 27), Elijah covered it with water (card 28) and prayed to God to send fire! And God did! (card 31) Everyone believed in the one true God. (Card 35)

    7. Wow! That was amazing! Elijah told them to pour water all over the wood. Does wood catch fire when its soaking wet? No. Water stops things from catching on fire. But Elijah prayed to God and a fire came down from the sky and burned everything up! Just as Elijah knew it would.

    8. God knew what Elijah needed, and God knew what the people needed to see in order to believe God was the one, true God. Isn't that amazing?

    9. God knew what was best for them, and God knows what's best for us, too!
