Lesson Overview

God Provides for Elijah: I Kings 17; (1 Peter 5:7)
The BIG Idea: It's amazing! God takes care of me

  • Have you ever been on a road trip and your stomach started growling? You ask when it's going to be time to stop for lunch, but you are told not for a while. That's like what happened to Elijah.

  • There was no food or water in the land, but God took care of him. God provided water for Elijah at a brook, which is a stream of water.

  • How did God provide meat and bread to Elijah? God took care of Elijah by sending ravens to provide his food.

  • The widow only had enough oil and flour to make one more meal for herself and her son. Elijah assured her that her jar of flour and oil would not run out until God sent the rain again.

  • Not only did God take care of Elijah, but God also took care of the widow and the son. There was food every day for Elijah and the widow and her son. It was amazing!

  • One day, the woman's son got sick and died. It was very sad, but Elijah prayed to God and do you know what? God took care of the boy and the boy was alive again!

  • What an amazing way God took care of Elijah! And God takes care of us, too.

AMAZED: A SERIES ON ELIJAH

SERIES OVERVIEW:

This month, we are going through the major events in the life of prophet Elijah, all of which are nothing short of amazing! Elijah’s ministry took place during turbulent times for God’s people – so much so that Elijah felt utterly alone at times. Sometimes he was literally alone. But God’s presence and power with Elijah throughout those times are undeniable. Through these stories, kids will discover how amazing it is that God takes care of us, God knows what’s best for us, God speaks to us, and all in all, God does SO MANY amazing things!

Lesson Overview

Nehemiah Asks to Rebuild the Wall: Nehemiah 2:1-20

THE BIG IDEA: We can ask God our questions

  • Our story today is about a man named Nehemiah. Nehemiah was born long after King Solomon and by the time he was around, the city where Solomon had built the temple, Jerusalem, was in poor shape. The walls had completely fallen apart! That made Nehemiah sad.

    1. Nehemiah lived far away from that city. He was a cupbearer to a King. A cupbearer is the person who tastes the king's food and drinks first to make sure they are safe for the king.

    2. The king noticed that Nehemiah was sad. He asked Nehemiah why he was feeling so sad and what he could do to help.

    3. Nehemiah asked the king if he could go to the city of Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. He also asked if the king would write letters to people who could help Nehemiah.

    4. The king agreed and sent people with Nehemiah so he would have a safe journey to Jerusalem. And just like our wall here, Nehemiah was able to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

    5. Nehemiah was wise. He let the king ask what the problem was first, instead of asking to leave for Jerusalem right away. When the king said yes, Nehemiah asked for very important things so that he could get the job done.

    6. We should always ask questions when we don't know something. God always finds a way to give us the answers we need, so we can ask God our questions!

WISE - A SERIES ON WISDOM

A lot of parents and kids alike focus more heavily on gleaning academic knowledge and gaining meaningful experiences, but teaching our kids to pursue wisdom will help them merge those fields and develop better, God-centered decision-making skills. Kids are placed in plenty of situations where they would need to exercise such discernment. While the wisdom they would need on a daily basis may not be on the scale of Solomon deliberating an argument between two women each claiming to be the rightful mother of a baby, kids will still collect valuable insight about wisdom from such stories. They will first determine wisdom comes from God,  and that being wise also has a lot to do with saying the right words and asking the right questions. . . all of which we can ask of God, who will give them to us because God can be trusted.
