What we’re studying this month

LEVEL UP: A 4-WEEK SERIES ON EASTER

Video games are something today’s kids are familiar with. . . maybe even too familiar! Games are played on every platform from game consoles to handheld devices/phones, and there are a ton of different games to choose from. But the constant across this diverse gaming universe is that every game has levels of increasing difficulty. When a player “levels up,” they are usually met with more challenges but also with more rewards. Through this series, we are challenging kids to “level up” their faith by examining the events surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection. Even though they might be facing difficulties and adversity of their own, kids will find the greatest rewards in their faith when they fix their eyes on Jesus. Because Jesus trusted God, Jesus beat death! When we doubt and have questions about God, Jesus helps me believe, and even during those times, Jesus is always with me.

Weekly Lesson Plan -

INSTRUCTIONS: Look up the story in your Bible. See if your kids can guess the Big Idea. Read Matthew 26:36-46 slowly and with expression, encouraging the kids to imagine the scene.

THE BIBLE: The Garden of Gethsemane: Matthew 26:36-46; (Psalm 28:7a)

BIG IDEA: Jesus trusted God.

Today, we are going to talk about a time when Jesus went into the garden to spend time with God. Jesus was going to do something really hard — the hardest thing ever. But Jesus trusted God. That is this week's Big Idea: Jesus trusted God.

  • How many times did Jesus pray? Jesus prayed three times because Jesus was about to do something really hard. Can you count with me? One, two, three (Ask the kids to count along on their fingers).

  • What did Jesus' friends do while Jesus was praying? That's right! They were sleeping! Show me how you sleep (Ask kids to pretend to sleep).

  • How do you think Jesus felt while praying? Jesus was probably very sad. How do you look when you are sad (Ask everyone to make a sad face)?

  • Jesus had a hard choice to make. But Jesus trusted God.

Additional SCRIPTURE | Psalm 28:7a

INSTRUCTIONS: Read Psalm 28:7a together.

  • This passage says God is both our strength and our shield. To remember this, let's try adding some motions: Strength (flex your biceps with both arms) and shield (fold in fisted arms in front of you so they are parallel to each other and cover you).

  • What is strength? It means power to help you overcome challenges.

  • What is a shield? It is something that protects you and defends you from harm.

  • In the story we heard today, Jesus prayed, asking if there was another way, but Jesus also prayed each time for God's will to be done. Jesus knew God would give Him strength. Jesus also knew God would be like a shield. Jesus trusted God and knew God would help Him face this difficult challenge.

ACTIVITY |Coloring page

INSTRUCTIONS: Use this time while the kids color to remind them of today's Bible story, the Big Idea, and the memory verse.

REFLECTION |Pressed for a Purpose

INSTRUCTIONS: Ask the kids to pause and reflect on what they learned so far.

  • Let's think back to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus was "pressed," meaning Jesus was pushed to the limit of how much He could handle. It was during this time that Jesus became more and more determined to carry out God's plan, even though it was going to cost Jesus everything.

  • What are some ways we are also "pressed"? They can be anything, from having to practice an instrument or a sport over and over again, or finding a way to be kind to someone who annoys you or is mean to you. When you are in the middle of it, it's hard to see where you're headed – like when you had to walk with a blindfold. But when you trust God just like Jesus did, God will show you how to understand the challenging things. And we will find out we were pressed for a purpose.

PRAYER

Toddler Tips: A toddler needs may have trouble understanding the concept of prayer because they cannot see God. Echo Prayer is a good strategy to encourage and teach kids how to talk to God. The teacher or parent speaks aloud a short segment of the prayer, and the children echo back the same sentence or phrase.

Dear God, help us to trust You just like Jesus did. Amen.

What we’re studying this month

REAL LOVE:A SERIES ON JESUS’ TEACHINGS

We are always teaching our kids that we need to love God and love one another, but often times neglect to give them tangible ways to do so. In this series, we are going to examine a few of Jesus’ teachings in-depth and discover practical ways we can demonstrate our love for God, family, friends, and enemies, too! Our hope is that by the end of this series, every kid will be able to say, because God loves everyone, I can show God’s love by being kind, I can show God’s love even when it’s hard, and that ultimately, love is the best choice!

Weekly Lesson Plan -

INSTRUCTIONS: Look up the story in your Bible. See if your kids can guess the Big Idea

THE BIBLE: The Greatest Commandment: Mark 12:28-34; (1 Corinthians 9:24-25)

BIG IDEA: Love is the best choice.

INSTRUCTIONS: summarize Mark 12:28-34 so it's easy for the kids to understand. Here's an example you can use:

  • One day, a man asked Jesus a question. He asked Jesus, "What is the most important rule?" Jesus said the most important rule was to love God.

  • But that's not all. We can't just love God a little bit. Jesus says to love God with all of our heart (draw a heart in the air), with all of our soul (put your hand on your chest), with all of our mind (put your hand on your temple), and with all of our strength (put your arms up and flex).

  • Then, Jesus said the second most important rule is to love other people. I know I want to show love to other people. How about you?

  • I can choose to show love to God. I can choose to show love to people. Love is the best choice.

Additional SCRIPTURE | 1 Corinthians 9:24-25

INSTRUCTIONS: Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 together as a group. If your kids have Bibles or if you have the Bible passage available for them, have them read along or read aloud. Otherwise, read to them.

  • Has anyone ever played a sport or been involved in some type of competition? What is the ultimate goal of the competition? That's right! To win!

  • At the end of the day, God wants us to be committed. Making God happy should always be our number one goal. We do this by thinking about every choice we make. And just in case you get lost among all the choices you have to make each day, you can be sure of one thing— love is the best choice!

ACTIVITY |Coloring page

INSTRUCTIONS: Remind the kids of today's story. Be sure to write each kid's name on the coloring page. Ask the kids how they are going to show they love God, and how they are going to show God's love to others this week.

REFLECTION | Loving Our Neighbors

INSTRUCTIONS: Go to the Compassion International website and view a few of the children’s profiles, reading about their different communities and countries. You could either browse through the site with your kids, or you can prepare a slideshow with screen grabs.

  • When Jesus tells us to love our neighbors, He’s not just talking about people who live near us. It means all people are our neighbors, even if they live in other parts of the world.

  • These are some of our neighbors from other countries. What kinds of needs do you think they have? And what can we do to show them love?

  • Remember — God loves everyone and God wants all of us to love everyone, too!

Ask the kids to stand up and do some motions with you as you pray together.

  • God, help me to love You with all my heart (draw a heart in the air)

  • with all my soul (put your hand on your chest)

  • with all my mind (put your hand on your temple)

  • and with all my strength (put your arms up and flex).

  • Help me to love others (have kids put arms around each other's shoulders).

Weekly Lesson Plan -

INSTRUCTIONS: Look up the story in your Bible. See if your kids can guess the Big Idea

THE BIBLE: Loving Your Enemies: Matthew 5:40-48; (Romans 12:20-21)

BIG IDEA: I can show God's love even when it's hard.

INSTRUCTIONS: Summarize Matthew 5:40-48 in an understandable way. You can say something like this:

  • It is easy to show love to someone who is nice to you. It is hard to show love to someone who is mean to you. But we can choose to show love to someone even when it is hard.

  • Jesus told us to "love your neighbor." Jesus wants us to love the people around us. Jesus also told us to "love our enemies." That means we are supposed to be kind to and respect people who are mean to us. We can pray for them, too.

  • God shows love to people who are nice and to people who are not nice.

  • We can choose to show love to people who are nice to us — that is easy to do. We can choose to show love to people who are mean to us — that is hard to do. But we can show love even when it is hard.

Additional SCRIPTURE | John 13:35

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Last week, we learned God loved the whole wide world –that means EVERYONE – so much, that God's own son, Jesus, was sent to save us. Isn't God's love truly amazing?

  • We love God, but God loved us first. We did nothing to deserve God's love, but God loves us anyway. In the same way, we should love others no matter who they are, and show kindness without expecting anything in return. And when we do, everyone will know we are followers of God!

ACTIVITY |Give Love

INSTRUCTIONS: Print copies of this week's printable. Give the kids heart stickers to stick onto all the grumpy/angry/unhappy faces.

  • You can give love to these grumpy faces. These heart stickers will help you remember to show God's love to everyone. Grumpy people need to know God loves them.

REFLECTION | “Love Your Enemies”

INSTRUCTIONS: Play this video (or another video like it), but don't tell them what it is about beforehand.

  • Think about some of the disagreements you have had in the past. They may have been with a relative, friend, teacher, or even a complete stranger. When we are upset with someone, what are some things we say or do that are like "throwing stones" at the other person?

  • What are some things we can say or do that are like "building a bridge" toward the other person?

  • Loving your enemies is not just saying it with words. It's about working toward forgiving them and building a bridge, even if they aren't willing to do the same.

God, we are so glad You give us good things to show us Your love. Help us to show God's love to people even when they are mean to us. Amen.
