LESSON OVERVIEW

WEEK:: FOUR

This week's Psalm is about following God and staying on the right path

BIG IDEA - I am forgiven because God loves me.
THE BIBLE: Confession and Forgiveness: Psalm 32; 1 John 1:9

INSTRUCTIONS: Look up the story in your Bible.

Forgiveness is a fancy word that means God helps us when we do wrong. God helps to take away all the bad things in our hearts and God helps us to make better choices the next time.

  • To be forgiven, we need to confess our sin or tell God about what we’ve done. I know what you’re thinking – doesn’t God already know? Yes, God knows.

  • But when we confess, we are saying that we also understand what we did is wrong and that we understand that we disobeyed God. We are saying God’s ways are the best ways and we want to obey God. When we do this, God forgives us and forgets we ever sinned! And if God forgets it, we can, too!

  • God not only forgets our sin, but will help us to make better choices the next time!

Read:: SCRIPTURE | 1 John 1:9

  • What does this verse tell us about God? That's correct! God is faithful. God is also fair. We don’t have to wonder if God will forgive us again when we sin again. God will because Jesus already promised to take away our sin for us.

  • What does this verse tell us about each other? It tells us we have to confess our sins. That’s the way we get God’s help to do better the next time. When we confess, we will receive forgiveness.

Toddler ACTIVITY | Forgiven & ForgotteN

INSTRUCTIONS: Using a chalk board or a dry erase board - Draw a big heart. Big enough that the kids can write inside of it.

Give your child a dry erase marker or or chalk and allow them to doodle all over their hearts. Then give them a wet wipe and have them erase all of their drawing off

  • When God forgives us, all those sins go away! God loves you so much. You are forgiven because God loves you!

PRAYER

Thank You, God, for being a lamp in my life. You lead me and make sure I stay safe. Thank You for Your words that help me to know the right thing to do.

SING: A SERIES ON THE PSALMS

SERIES OVERVIEW:

People say music is the universal language, something everyone loves in one form or another, and a way we can communicate shared emotion and experience even across generations, culture, location, backgrounds, and traditions. Much of what is expressed in the book of Psalm are things we experience and feel today. Because of that, we can learn a lot about God and ourselves in these Psalms. When kids can claim these five things – I am wonderful because God made me; I am safe because God watches over me; I am confident because God leads me; I am forgiven because God loves me; I am not afraid because God can be trusted – they will be unstoppable in their life with God!

LESSON OVERVIEW

WEEK:: THREE

This week's Psalm is about following God and staying on the right path

BIG IDEA - I am confident because God leads me.
THE BIBLE: Your Word is a Lamp for My Feet: Psalm 119:101-105

INSTRUCTIONS: Look up the story in your Bible.

Hold up a light source for this segment, such as a flashlight, lantern, cell phone light, or glow stick.

  • TODDLER TIPS: Consider passing around the lamp or flashlight that kids can take turns turning on and off.

Light is very important! It helps us to see everything around us. When we can see things clearly, we know which way to go.

  • God’s words to us, like those right here in the Bible, are like light for our lives. When we obey God’s words, they help to protect us from harm and danger. And when we need to know what to do and what not to do, God helps us figure it out.

  • Read verse 103 again. The psalmist, or the writer of the psalm, says God's words are sweeter than honey. That means he loves God's Word so much and enjoys spending time with God. When we have that same love for God's Word, we will read the Bible more. And when we read the Bible more, we will always know which way God is leading us!

Toddler ACTIVITY | What is this?

Have your child try to guess what is in your bag!

  • INSTRUCTIONS: Place random objects into different paper bags. Have your child/ren come up and guess what's in each bag without looking in the bag. Try to choose items that kids might not be able to guess right away.

  • Sometimes, it's hard to know what something is when we can't see it! God's Word is a light that helps us see God.

  • I am confident because God leads me!

PRAYER

Thank You, God, for being a lamp in my life. You lead me and make sure I stay safe. Thank You for Your words that help me to know the right thing to do.

LESSON OVERVIEW

WEEK:: TWO

This week's Psalm is about howJesus is our Shepherd and we are His sheep.

BIG IDEA - I am safe because God watches over me.
THE BIBLE: The Lord is My Shepherd: Psalm 23; (Philippians 4:6-7, 19)

INSTRUCTIONS: Look up the story in your Bible.

Does anyone remember who King David is? Does anyone remember what his job was before he became king?
That’s right, David used to be a shepherd. So he knows what he’s talking about when he describes how a shepherd takes care of their sheep in this psalm.

The shepherd makes sure the sheep have food and water. The shepherd makes sure the sheep stay on the right paths. The shepherd protects the sheep from harm.
God loves us and takes care of us the same way a shepherd loves and takes care of sheep. Sheep don’t always know how to take care of themselves, so they always need a shepherd looking out for them. We are all a lot like sheep because we need help sometimes, too. Good thing we have a great shepherd like God to take care of us!

Toddler ACTIVITY | Shepherds and Farmers

INSTRUCTIONS: Put out a farm set with different kinds of animals and a fence (if you don’t have a set, you can always improvise by mixing different toys and use blocks as fence). Have kids play with the toy animals and give them prompts as they play to “take care” of them (e.g., “It’s feeding time!”).

PRAYER

Dear God, Thank you for being our shepherd and giving us everything we need. Help us to turn to you when we aren’t feeling so great in our hearts, like when we are worried or scared or stressed or angry. We know we are safe because you watch over us.
